3Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Ankara, Prof. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate central corneal thickness (CCT) in children and to compare the measurements of CCT with respect to age and gender.
Materials and Methods: This study included 75 eyes of 75 children, who were healthy or had no disease that might affect CCT. A complete ophthalmological examination was performed and CCT was measured by ultrasound pachymetry. Three measurements were obtained in each eye and the mean values of right eyes were used for statistical analysis. Children were divided into three groups according to age: 5- 8, 9-12 and 13-16 years.
Results: The mean CCT was 548±30 μm for all children. The mean CCT in the boys was 554±31 μm. It was 544±28 μm in the girls. When CCT was evaluated for age groups, it was 555±25 μm for 5 to 8 years of age, 550±32 μm for 9 to 12 years of age and 543±30 μm for 13 to 16 years of age. There was no statistically significant difference for mean CCT with respect to gender or age (p>0.05).
Conclusions: CCT can be evaluated by ultrasound pachymetry in children. The results of this study indicate that in children the mean CCT values are similar to adults’ values and do not show any difference with respect to age or sex.
