Dr. Purpose: To evaluate the results and complications of cataract surgery with phacoemulsification in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.
Materials and Methods: 72 eyes of 63 patients who were operated by two surgeons (UY, AÖ) with phacoemulsification between January 2008 and May 2010 were included in this study retrospectively. Preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure and complications of the surgery is analyzed.
Results: The mean age of the patients' was 75±7.3 years (53- 97 years). 36 patients were women, 27 patients were men. Mean follow up time was 9.1±4.9 (1-30 months). Mean preoperative BCVA was 1.09±0.46 LogMAR (0.3-1.5 LogMAR) and mean postoperative BCVA was 0.14±0.25 LogMAR (0-1 LogMAR) and the difference was statistically significant. (p<0.01). Preoperative and postoperative men IOP was 16.1±3.1 mmHg and 14.6±3.1 mmHg, the difference was significant. (p<0.01). Peroperatively zonular dialyses occured in 5 patients (6.9%). Posterior capsule break occured in 5 patients (6.9%). During the follow up period posterior capsular opasification occured in 3 patients (4.1%), cystoid macular edema occured in 2 patients (2.7%) and glaucoma secondary to aphakia occured in 1 patient (1.3%).
Conclusion: Cataract surgery with phacoemulsification has high complication rates in PS. Therefore if these operations are performed by experienced surgeons, management of complications of these operations can be performed confidently, medicolegal problems should be avoided and the operations can be more safe for the patients.
