Purpose: To purpose of our study was to evaluate possible hematologic, immunologic and biochemical findings in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) cases.
Material and Methods: The study groups included 32 patients who were followed at the Glaucoma Section of Ankara University Department of Ophthalmology between April 2005-December 2007. The control group consisted of 26 subjects who had no ocular disease. Blood samples were taken in the appropriate tubes from all participants for complete blood count, lipid profile, coagulation tests and immunological tests.
Results: In NTG cases, mean thrombocyte, mean low density lipoprotein (LDL), and mean total cholesterol levels were significantly higher than control group (p=0.041, 0.047, 0.046 respectively). Furthermore, number of patients whose LDL, very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and total cholesterol levels are higher than normal levels, was significiantly higher in NTG group (p=0.043, p=0.025, p=0.048 respectively).
Conclusions: NTG etiopatogenesis is not completely understood recently. High levels of lipids in NTG patients, considered that several mechanisms play a role together in the patogenesis.
Keywords : Normal tension glaucoma, lipid profile, coagulation tests, immunological tests
