The Comparison Between Torsional and Conventional Mode Phacoemulsification Methods in Senile Cataracts

Purpose: To compare intraoperative parameters between conventionel and torsional phacoemulsification method for cataractous eyes.

Materials and Method: Thirty-six eyes of 36 patients suffering from age-related cataract were enrolled in this comparative randomized masked clinical study. The eyes had nuclear cataracts of grades III using the Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS III). Lenses that had developed cataract were divided into 2 equal pieces by phacoemulsification. Phacoemulsification was applied to first piece using conventional phaco and the second piece using torsional phaco technique. The pieces eaten by conventional mode phacoemulsification were named as group 1 and with torsional mode phacoemulsification as group 2. Parametric comparisons were made in terms of peroperative conventional and torsional total U/S time, total energy (U/STEPIP3%), CDE and aspiration time.

Conclusions: The total U/S, CDE and aspiration time parameters of the torsional phacoemulsification method are found to be lower than those of the conventional method in a statistically significant way (p=0.002, p=0.018, p=0.046, respectively).

Discussion: Torsional phacoemulsification technique is seen as a method more reliable and more effective method than the conventional method. Keywords : Longitudinal phaco, torsional phaco, aspiration time
