Purpose: To compare central corneal thickness measurements obtained with the Scheimpflug imaging system and optical coherence tomography.

Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty eight eyes of 64 patients (24 male, 40 female) were included in the study. Central corneal thickness was measured with the Scheimpflug imaging system (AL-Scan, NidekCo., Gamagori, Japan) and optical coherence tomography (Optuvue, Inc., Fremont, CA, USA). The difference between the two methods was analyzed with the paired t test and the correlation between the two methods was evaluated with Pearson correlation analysis.

Results: The mean age of the study population was 44.84+18.60 (10-83) years. The mean corneal thickness measurement of the cases 544+30.63 μm (455-620) by the Scheimpflug imaging system and 529.55±31.13 μm (438-607) by optical coherence tomography. The difference of the measurements between the two methods was statistically significant in the paired t test (p<0.001). The mean central corneal thickness measurement was 529.54-559.02 μm by the Scheimpflug imaging system and 514.81-544.29 μm by optical coherence tomography within 95% confidence intervals with Pearson correlation analysis. A significant correlation was present between the two methods (r=0.974, p<0.001).

Conclusion: Central corneal thickness measurements with the Scheimpflug imaging system and optical coherence tomography are highly correlated. Measurements with the Scheimpflug imaging system were higher than with optical coherence tomography. Although both methods are comparable, they should not be used interchangeably. Keywords : Central corneal thickness, optical coherence tomography, pachymetry, Scheimpflug imaging
