2M.D. Asistaant, Kayseri Training and Research Hospital, Eye Clinic, Kayseri/TURKEY Purpose: The aims of this study are to compare the difference between phaco parameters of torsional mode phacoemulsification with different energy oscillation (burst and continuous mode) and to compare the effect of these modes to the corneal thickness and endothelial dansity.
Materials and Method: This study enrolled 80 eyes of 80 patients with senile cataract. The patients were divided into two groups randomly. The patients in group 1 had cataract operation with burst mode of torsional phacoemulsification and the patients in group 2 had cataract operation with continuous mode of OZIL torsional phacoemulsification (Infiniti, Alcon). There was no difference in nuclear dansity between groups according to Lense Opacites Classification System III. Total US time, cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), phacoemulsification and torsional time, aspiration time, corneal thickness and endothelial count in postoperativeday 1 and day 30 were assessed.
Results: Total US time, CDE, average phacoemulsification time, torsional time and used fluid amount were found as lower in burst mode of torsional phacoemulsification than in continuous mode of torsional phacoemulsification and p values were p<0.001 , p<0.001, p<0.001 , p<0.001, p<0.05, respectively. The difference between two groups in endothelial loss at posoperativeday 30 was not statistically significant (p:0.304). The central corneal thickness at posoperative day 1 was higher in continuous mode than in burst mode and this increase was statistically significant (p<0.001). But the difference at postoperative day 30 was not statistically significant (p:0.80).
Conclusion: Burst mode of torsional phacoemulsification reveals less energy than continuous mode and it seems like more reliable and more effective method.
