2Sağlık Bakanlığı, Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim Hast. I. Göz Kliniği, Ankara, Doç. Dr. Purpose: To investigate the effects of posterior subtenon injection of corticosteroids on intraocular pressure (IOP) in the cases with chronic uveitis.
Materials and Methods: This prospective study was based on 42 eyes of 42 patients with chronic uveitis who received posterior subtenon’s injections (PSTSI) of triamcinolone acetonide. The IOP was observed for at least 3 months’ time, and the IOP values before and after the injections were statistically compared by using paired student t-test.
Results: The mean IOP before the injection was 11.8±2.7 mmHg (6-17 mmHg), while it was 16.5±7.7 mmHg (6-46 mmHg) at the first month and 14.3±4.7 mmHg (7-30 mmHg) at the third month after the injection. The differences between the IOP measurements from the baseline and at the first and third months after the injections were found to be statistically significant (p<0.00001, p=0.001). In 4 eyes topical anti-glaucomatous agents were used while in 3 eyes trabeculectomies with mitomycin- C were performed to control the IOP.
Conclusions: Posterior subtenon injection of corticosteroids can cause either transient or chronic increase in IOP in the cases with chronic uveitis. Intraocular pressure needs to be monitored in eyes receiving PSTSI.
