²M.D. Professor, Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Istanbul/TURKEY The aim of this article is to review the recent advances of neuroprotective treatment strategies in glaucoma, which is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Neuroprotective strategies include prevention of glutamate excitotoxicity, decreasing the level of oxidative stress, modulation of mitochondrial dysfunction, prevention of apoptosis, regulation of inflammatory and immune responses, and modulation of protein misfolding and glial cell metabolism.
