Materials and Methods: 40 years and older 3084 patients who applied to ophthalmology polyclinic of our hospital from the surrounding area were included in this study prospectively between January 2013 and July 2014. Detailed biomicroscopic examination, best corrected visual acuity, dilated fundus evaluation with 90 diopter Goldmann indirect lens was performed in all patients. t-test, anova and regression analyses were used as statistical method. P<0.05 values were accepted statisticaly significant.
Results: The mean age was 61.54±12.4 years. When all age groups were handled, 136 of the 3084 patients (4.4%) had pseudoexfoliation. 64 (47%) of 136 patients were woman and 72 (53%) of them were man who had pseudoexfoliation. The difference was statistically significant (p=0.004). 4 of 1333 patients (0.3%) between 40-59 years, 60 of 1395 patients (4.3%) between 60-79 years, 72 of 356 patients (20.2%) 80 years and older age had pseudoexfoliation. Frequency of the pseudoexfoliation was significantly increased by age (r:0.27, p< 0.001). While pseudoexfoliation was viewing in both eyes in 67% of all patients, it was one eye in 33% of patients. The difference between them was statistically significant (p<0.001).
Conclusions: We believe that there is need for a multicenter, more comprehensive study although this study give an idea about frequency of pseudoexfoliation in 40 years old and over patients who applied ophthalmology polyclinic of our hospital.
